Some call it a curse, others say it’s a miracle, regardless of what it’s called, it was on that faithful day when Arteezy earned his nickname, Cliffteezy. If you’re a long-time Artour fan, you probably know him by many myths. Another Arteezy myth is that he is blessed with the number 3, thus allowing Evil Geniuses to always win third place in various tournaments.
In fact, EG now holds the highest number of third-place finishes to date, and I probably didn’t do enough research to find out, but chances are, EG’s third-place records are also the highest in the entire Esports scene.
Cliffteezy, the Myth, the Legend
It all started back in early 2019, during the Chongqing Major, in a match between EG and Team Secret. Arteezy was playing his signature Terrorblade when he made a careless move of fighting around the top Radiant jungle’s cliff.
Former Arteezy’s pal, Zai, was responsible for putting him on the cliff using Dark Seer’s Vacuum. Arteezy panickily teleported on the cliff, only to get stunned by Team Secret heroes. He had BKB, but he forgot to use it, leading to his painfully long moment on the cliff.
Despite his team’s effort to play around the cliff, Team Secret want nowhere close to it and managed to chase other EG players away from the spot. This led to EG having to need to play 4 versus 5, and even with multiple buybacks from s4 and Cr1t-, they just ended up dying twice.
History repeats itself
Fast forward to present times, as much as Arteezy wanted to forget about the incident, Arteezy still loved playing too close to the cliff. This time, it’s at the BTS Pro Series Season 2: Americas, where EG faced off against Thunder Predators.
It was already the second game (after EG won the first one), and EG was already quite ahead in gold lead. Despite not having their offlaner around, EG still wanted to fight Thunder Predators as Ryoya’s Storm Spirit and Arteezy’s Abaddon, chased after Thunder Predator heroes.
As Arteezy man-fights every Thunder Predator enemy, the enemy Mars used Spear of Mars to push Arteezy onto the cliff. What made it insane was that Mars launched the skill at the right distance to avoid sending Arteezy to the other side of the cliff instead.
Evil Geniuses are still going strong
The incident somehow allowed Thunder Predator to come back from the game. EG, who once had 10k gold lead, lost it all instantly after losing several consecutive fights. Yet, regardless of the unexpected incident, EG eventually won the game anyways.
It was at the Roshan’s pit, but Thunder Predator just couldn’t win the team fight against the likes of EG. Arteezy took everybody’s life, and with no buybacks on the opponent’s side, GG is called. With that, EG proceeds further into the Playoffs, but the Americas pro scene has certainly grown stronger recently.
With teams such as Quincy Crew, EternalEnvy’s Business Associates and even 4 Zoomers, it will be too optimistic for EG fans to say they got this in the bag. Stay tuned.
