Regional Open qualifiers for The International 2019 have been underway since yesterday and two Chinese teams have already progressed through these to make it through to the closed qualifier for the region.
The first Open qualifier for CN had some absolutely massive names participating such as Xu ‘BurNIng’ Zhilei, Bu ‘YaphetS’ Yanjun and Jiang ‘YYF’ Cen, to name but a few. With new teams such as Team Solid, Team Gase and a new roster for For the Dream, it was expected to be an extremely intense qualifier. However, the first team from the region to push through to join the closed qualifier was the CDEC Gaming. While a totally different squad from the 2015 team that came through the Wildcards to claim 2nd place at TI, this CDEC iteration looked promising. The full CDEC Gaming squad heading to the closed qualifier for China is:
Guo ‘Eve’ Yuhang
Guo ‘Xm’ Hongcheng
Shen ‘123’ Chao
Zhou ‘James’ Yifu
Chen ‘Victoria’ Guanhong
Many might remember Xm as being the stand-in for PSG.LGD for the early part of 2019 while Victoria has also been a memorable name in the older days of LGD too. This CDEC squad will be hoping that they can maybe take the closed qualifier by storm and pull off something similar to their 2015 TI run.
A much more well-known team were the second to qualify from the Chinese Open qualifiers – Invictus Gaming. The fight for the spot came down to either themselves or Team Serenity, also a massively respected team. While iG have really not featured at all in the DPC, they did have one showing this season at MDL Macua 2019 – where they fell to Virtus.pro early in the event. However, the team now hope to utilise this chance and possibly make a return to the top tiers of Dota 2 at TI9. The full iG squad heading to the closed qualifier is:
Jin ‘zhizhizhi’ Zhiyi
Zhou ‘Emo’ Yi
Thiay ‘JT-‘ Jun Wen
Gao ‘dogf1ghts’ Tianpeng
Chan ‘Oli’ Chon Kien
Many will know or remember zhizhizhi from his time with Team Serenity who made a very enjoyable run through TI8 – taking games off Team Secret, VP, TNC Predator and eliminating Fnatic too during their short time at the event. The player is currently on loan to iG but will be hoping that he can return to TI and find more glory at the epic event.
There are still two more China teams who will progress through the open qualifiers to reach the closed qualifier, but those will be decided in the coming days. Later today there will be a few Southeast Asia teams reaching their own region’s closed bracket too as we get closed to finding the final teams to join TI9.
