Knocked out in the first round of the lower bracket at EPICENTER 2019, the last Major tournament on the Dota Pro Circuit season, paiN Gaming decided to make a final roster change heading into The International 2019 closed regional qualifiers.
Leonardo “Mandy” Viana was dropped from the team and got instantly picked up by Beastcoast, therefore he will be playing for a chance at a ticket to Shanghai, China for TI9 in the NA regionals. In the meantime, paiN Gaming will continue to fight with a full Brazilian line-up as William “hFn” Medeiros is welcomed back.
hFn has a long history with the Brazilian organization. He actually made his professional debut with paiN back in 2013 and since then he’s been one of their most devoted players. He briefly played for other South American organizations through 2016 and 2017 when most of the Dota 2 fans got to know the SA scene better. hFn qualified for last year’s TI with paiN and started the 2018-2019 competitive season under their banner, but at the beginning of 2019, just ahead of the Chongqing Major, the five members of the team decided to part ways with the organization and joined Chaos Esports Club. They placed only 9-12th in China and as no improvements were made with the next two Majors, the team nearly disbanded and moved their entire operations in Europe.
During the regional qualifiers for EPICENTER, hFn was the only Brazilian player left on the roster, but as soon as the team failed to secure a slot to the last Major of the season, hFn returned to Brazil and Chaos rebuilt, welcoming aboard Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen.
Following paiN’s elimination from EPICENTER Major we had the chance to talk to Rodrigo “Lelis” Santos, who was somewhat looking forward to a possible roster change. He didn’t hide it when we asked him, but he also mentioned that what worried him more going into the TI qualifiers was the “the mental state of the team.” hFn might be the exact morale boost the team needs for starting the qualifiers in a better mood. The SA closed regional qualifiers will commence on the 7th of July 2019.
